Des commer\u00e7ants empruntent \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque la route du col du Susten. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 un \u00e9largissement, le sentier des muletiers est praticable d\u00e8s 1870 avec des chariots l\u00e9gers jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la vall\u00e9e du Meientel, dans le canton d\u2019Uri. Les commer\u00e7ants se dirigent vers le sud et l\u2019Italie avec du fromage, du b\u00e9tail et des chevaux. Ils reviennent dans l\u2019Oberland bernois avec de la polenta, du riz, de l\u2019huile, des \u00e9pices et du vin. <\/p><p class=\"ffb-id-6mq7qunp fg-paragraph text-left    fg-text-dark\">Les artistes, quant \u00e0 eux, cherchent l\u2019inspiration lors de leurs voyages et se laissent s\u00e9duire par ces paysages uniques. C\u2019est ainsi qu\u2019en \u00e9t\u00e9 1894, le peintre et m\u00e9dailleur neuch\u00e2telois Fritz Ulysse Landry (1842 \u2013 1927) franchit lui aussi le col du Susten et fait une halte sur la Steinalp. Autrefois, les visiteurs devaient se contenter de dormir dans une cabane de berger, mais depuis le milieu du 19e si\u00e8cle, un petit refuge de montagne, \u00abZum Stein\u00bb, se dresse l\u00e0 avec une poign\u00e9e de lits. La jeune Rosa T\u00e4nnler accueille et prend soin des voyageurs.<\/p><p class=\"ffb-id-6mq7qunq fg-paragraph text-left    fg-text-dark\">Aussi idylliques que puissent para\u00eetre les montagnes et les pentes rocheuses sous le soleil, la situation peut rapidement basculer, avec des avalanches en hiver et des glissements de terrain en \u00e9t\u00e9. \u00c0 l\u2019\u00e9poque, le d\u00e9frichement et la vente de bois de chauffage sont responsables de l\u2019absence de for\u00eat de protection. Les habitants ont su s\u2019accommoder de ce c\u00f4t\u00e9 rude de la nature, m\u00eame si, par le pass\u00e9, des personnes ont brutalement perdu la vie (22 morts en 1808) ou \u00e9t\u00e9
